Abstract

Abstract

Humans in life are never separated from the goal. Human goals are so complex that it cannot be separated from the process from thinking to the point of philosophy. In understanding the goal, humans try to achieve that goal. The goal of humans ethically is to achieve a happiness. Happiness here also has a shared perception of pleasure, enjoyment, and peace. This paper attempts to describe ethical thinking related to the purpose of human life by comparing the cārvāka philosophy with the hedonistic thought of Epikuros. Both of these thoughts have the same view, namely the concept of hedonism or pleasure sought by humans. However, apart from the similarities, there are also differences. Where, cārvāka is a philosophy with atheism nuances, meaning that it does not believe in the existence of God with the assumption of material enjoyment as the goal of human life. In contrast to Epicurus that humans seek pleasure can also be obtained from the spiritual aspect, to achieve the goal of life, namely in the form of peace of mind. The benefit of this paper is that it can contribute to readers regarding the cārvāka teachings and Epikuros  thoughts related to the aspect of hedonism.
